Why Sterling Point is your next Teen Drama to binge
If you’re craving a juicy teen drama filled with romance, complicated family dynamics, and a beautiful island setting, then look no further. Earlier this month, Prime released Sterling Point, a teen drama that will have you binge-watching and counting down the days until Season 2.
The series follows Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin), whose life is turned upside down when she learns she has inherited a mysterious island in Canada from her estranged grandfather. Realizing she doesn’t know her family nearly as well as she thought, Annie sets off to the island, only to uncover decades-old secrets. Between family mysteries, multiple love interests, and the responsibility of suddenly owning an island, Annie’s summer becomes far more complicated than she ever imagined.
The ensemble cast is one of the show's biggest strengths. I found myself invested in every single character and their storyline because they all truly intertwined with each other’s lives. However, what felt most natural about the group was how relatable their dialogue was. They actually sounded like teenagers and acted like them, too. I found myself relating to them heavily and even using some of the same dialogue they did in my own daily life.
TV creator Megan Park, known for The Secret Life of the American Teenager, created a fun and authentic atmosphere on set. She even allowed the cast to change their own lines if they didn’t feel like something teenagers would actually say. That freedom to creatively collaborate on set was a major benefit to the show and helped audiences fall in love with the characters. Especially after that iconic improvised closet moment, if you know, you know.
At first, I assumed we were getting another teen drama centered primarily around romance with not much else beneath the surface. While the romantic storylines are compelling, the heart of the series is family. Sure, I was invested in whether Annie was going to end up with Ellis or Rory, but her relationship with Ramona quickly became what mattered most to me.
While they may have had an unconventional start to their relationship, the two somehow captured the chaos, humor, and heart of sisterhood. Some of my favorite scenes came from watching them slowly develop their relationship. Even after Ramona literally threw Annie out of her cabin at the beginning, watching their bond grow into something genuine was one of the most fun parts of the series.
Of course, the season still leaves us with plenty of unanswered questions. Annie’s twin brother Connor has contacted his biological mother, Ramona is headed to New York, and several romantic storylines remain unresolved back in Sterling Point. Thankfully, we don’t have to spend the next year wondering if Prime will leave us hanging because Sterling Point has officially been renewed for a second season!
There’s more than enough story left to tell as Annie and Ramona continue navigating their newly discovered family, while Annie’s love life is sure to bring even more drama. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Season 2. Maybe the curse of Prime original shows getting canceled has finally ended here.
